How to Measure a Golf Cart for a Cover
If you need to know how to measure a golf cart for a cover, start with your tape measure — not seat count and not a random Amazon size name. Wrong length, a short-roof cover stretched over a grab bar, or a “universal” hem that will not clear lifted tires are the usual reasons a storage cover fails to fit.
This All Good Covers fit guide walks through roof length, roof width, overall cart length, outside-tire width, and height. It is written for parked storage covers (custom printed covers from allgoodcovers.com), not driving enclosures. OEM and dealer numbers below are starting points only — always verify on your cart.
Storage cover vs enclosure
A storage cover is for parked protection: dust, sun, rain, and weather while the cart sits. It has to clear the whole envelope — nose, roof, tires, rear grab bar, flip seat, cargo box, hitch — not just the canopy.
A driving enclosure hangs from the roof and wraps the cabin so you can drive in weather. Enclosure charts often size mainly by roof length and seating layout. Do not reuse enclosure-only advice for a full storage cover without measuring overall length and tire width.
The five numbers that matter
Before you open any golf cart cover size chart, record these five measurements (inches and centimeters if you can).
- Roof length — bottom edge of the roof shell at the front to the bottom edge at the back (centerline). Not the outer lip tip. Also note an outer-edge-to-outer-edge reading to cross-check competitor charts.
- Roof width — bottom edge of the roof shell at the left to the bottom edge at the right.
- Overall cart length — nose / front bumper to the rearmost point (bumper, grab bar, flip-seat footrest, cargo box, bag holder, or hitch).
- Outside-tire width — outside of left tire to outside of right, front and rear; use the larger. Include flares that stay on under the cover; fold mirrors out of the measurement.
- Height — ground to the highest fixed point (roof, light bar, or rack). Round up.
Step-by-step: how to measure your golf cart for a cover
- Park and configure as stored — Level ground. Windshield as you store it. Grab bar on. Footrest down if that is how it sits. Cooler or cargo mounted if it stays on. Fold mirrors if they fold under the cover.
- Measure roof length (AGC method) — Tape along the bottom edge of the roof shell from front to back (centerline). Stop at the roof’s lower perimeter — not the outer lip tip, not the strut. Do not measure only the flat top skin.
- Optional: edge-to-edge cross-check — Most competitor guides (Classic Accessories, Formosa, and others) say front outer edge to back outer edge. On a curved or lipped roof that number is usually a few inches longer than base-to-base. Record both so you can compare charts honestly.
- Measure roof width — Bottom edge of the roof shell, left to right. Some brands skip width; All Good Covers still wants it for fit — especially non-OEM and LSV carts.
- Measure overall length along the ground — Mark the floor at the nose and at the rearmost extremity, then measure between marks. Measuring over the body can add a foot or more. Include grab bars, footrests, cargo, and hitch if they stay on.
- Measure outside-tire width — Front axle and rear axle; keep the larger number. This step decides Universal vs Lifted as much as height does.
- Measure height — Ground to highest fixed point. Lifted carts with racks or light bars often need more height than a stock 60–66 in cover envelope.
- Run the accessory checklist — Grab bar, flip seat / 2+2 under short roof, extended roof, all-forward 4P, cargo box, lift + oversized tires, light bar / rack, mirrors, windshield type.
- Choose length class, then Universal vs Lifted — Match overall length class (8 / 9 / 10 / 12 / 13 ft style naming) and roof class (short vs extended). Then choose Universal or Lifted from tire width and lift — not from seat count alone.
How to measure golf cart roof length: base-to-base vs edge-to-edge
Industry storage and enclosure brands usually tell you to measure roof length from the front outer edge to the back outer edge in a straight line. That is the language you will see on Classic Accessories, Formosa, and similar charts.
All Good Covers teaches base-to-base as the bottom edge of the roof shell — front → back for length, left → right for width — not the outer flared lip. That method is stricter on curved or lipped canopies and matches how our patterns were built. Keep using base-to-base on our size chart, and keep an edge-to-edge note so you can cross-check a competitor chart without mixing methods.

How to read these two diagrams: Diagram 1 (side view) is length only: FRONT → REAR along the bottom edge of the roof shell. Diagram 2 (front view) is width only: LEFT → RIGHT along the same bottom edge. Blue dots labeled BASE are on that bottom edge — not the outer lip tip and not the strut. Dashed gray on the length diagram is edge-to-edge for competitor charts.
Why published “54 inch” roofs and “57–58 inch” enclosure cuts both exist: OEM catalogs often list Club Car / E-Z-GO short roofs around 54 in, while aftermarket enclosure cuts for the same carts often run 57–58 in depending on where the tape sits. Your cart wins over any published number.
Short roof vs extended roof (and the 2+2 trap)
Seat count is not roof class. A rear seat under a short factory roof is still a short-roof cart — often called a 2+2 — not an extended 4-passenger roof.
All Good Covers roof cutoffs (confirmed): Short roof: up to 60 in base-to-base. Extended: about 82 in. 10 ft 4-passenger (lifted and non-lifted): about 92 in roof. Always measure your cart — aftermarket tops vary.
- Most E-Z-GO and Club Car 2-passenger OEM roofs: about 54 in (still Short under the 60 in cutoff).
- Yamaha G14 / G16 / G22 roofs: about 60 in (at the Short cutoff).
- Yamaha Drive / Drive2 roofs: about 70 in — longer than Club Car / EZGO short roofs; not a classic Short 54 in cover.
- Most aftermarket extended roofs: about 80–82 in (AGC Extended band).
- Some newer factory / premium extended roofs: about 86–88 in; 10 ft 4P tops around 92 in on AGC’s chart.
- Factory 4-passenger carts overall: about 9–10.5 ft (roughly 105–125 in), not a flat 10 ft with 88–90 in roofs as the default.
Most common sizing mistake: A 2+2 with a short roof is still a short-roof cart. Ordering “4 passenger extended” because you have four seats leaves excess fabric; ordering by seats alone and ignoring overall length leaves rear extremities uncovered.
Grab bars, rear seats, and cargo
If anything sits behind the rear seat — grab bar, flip-seat footrest, cargo box, bag holder, hitch — size by overall length, not roof length alone. Overall length runs from the front-most point of the cart to the rearmost extremity of the rear foot platform / grab bar (not to the seat back).
From All Good Covers fit experience: a short-roof cover on a short-roof cart with a rear grab bar may fail to clear the bar, or clear with contact. Chronic tension at that contact point raises tear risk over time. There is no single standard grab-bar size across aftermarket rear seats, so measure your cart as stored.
Practical rule: when a grab bar (or similar rear upright) is present, strongly consider the longer / Extended length class even if roof length alone says Short.
Lifted golf cart cover size: width matters as much as height
Lift kits change width and height, not height alone. Spindle lifts can add up to about 4 in of width, long-travel kits up to about 8 in, and offset wheels about 1 in more (industry lift guidance). Club Car Onward 4P OEM specs show non-lifted about 108 × 48.75 × 71–76 in vs lifted about 114 × 49.5 × 80.5 in, with front track moving from about 35.75 to 40.25 in.
All Good Covers lifted patterns use about 48.0 in (122 cm) roof-top width and about 53.0 in (134.7 cm) bottom width so the hem clears wider tires. Many Amazon “lifted” covers only add height (for example 66 → 73 in) and stay about 48–50 in wide — tight on 22×11 / 23×10 packages.
Lifted ≠ taller only: Choose Lifted when you run a lift kit and/or oversized tires, or when outside-tire width approaches or exceeds about 53 in. Do not equate Lifted with Extended roof — a cart can be short-roof + lifted or extended + non-lifted. Length class and Universal/Lifted are a two-axis choice.
Edge cases where overall width can exceed a ~53 in lifted bottom (often with mirrors out): Evolution D5 Maverick / Ranger family ~55.8 in; Evolution Classic / Forester 4–6 Plus ~55 in; HDK Classic family ~55.1 in; HDK D3 ~60.0 in with mirrors; Epic E40FX ~56 in; Polaris GEM e2/e4/e6 ~55.5 in; Garia ~58 in mirrors out; Club Car CRU ~69.5 in mirrors out. Measure tire-to-tire with mirrors folded for cover width when mirrors fold under the cover.
What 8 / 9 / 10 / 12 / 13 ft means
In the storage-cover trade, 8 / 9 / 10 / 12 / 13 ft names track overall cart / cover length class more than roof length alone. Use these as planning bands — then confirm with your five numbers.
| Length class | About | Example models (OEM / dealer ranges) |
|---|---|---|
| ~8 ft | ~96 in | Many 2P carts ~91.5–94.5 in overall (Club Car Onward 2P 91.5; E-Z-GO RXV / Valor / TXT ~93–94.5; Yamaha Drive2 ~93.7) |
| ~9 ft | ~108 in | Club Car Onward 4P non-lifted 108 in; many short-roof 2+2 bodies in this band |
| ~10 ft | ~120 in | Many lifted 4P ~113–118 in (Onward 4P lifted 114; ICON i40L 113; Express S4 ~115). Not every long 4P fits: Evolution D5 Maverick 2+2 is ~124.8 in |
| ~12 ft | ~144 in | Club Car Onward 6P 143 in; E-Z-GO Valor 6 141.5 in |
| ~13 ft | ~156 in | Onward 6P lifted / Club Car CRU ~148 in; longer limos and 6+2 / 8P bodies can exceed this class |
Roof length cutoffs locked for All Good Covers: Short ≤60 in, Extended ~82 in, 10 ft 4-passenger ~92 in (lifted and non-lifted). Confirm overall-length class (8 / 9 / 10 / 12 / 13) on the product page or with support before made-to-order.

Hermes roof-length fields are sparse for most brands (many OEM sheets publish overall L×W×H only). Verified Hermes roof examples include Yamaha Drive2 ~70 in factory-style tops and some extended aftermarket tops (~80 / ~88 in). Prefer measuring roof length on your cart.
Aftermarket extended roof sizes (planning)
| Roof type | Typical length (in) | Source note |
|---|---|---|
| Universal extended | ~80 | Most common aftermarket extended size |
| Extended option | ~84 | Listed on OEM roof buyer guides |
| Newer factory / premium extended | ~86–88 | Not the default for every new 4P |
| 6P-class extended | ~112–120 | Six-passenger / limo tops |
Common measuring mistakes
- Choosing by seat count instead of roof class + overall length
- Measuring only the flat top of the roof (short reading)
- Ignoring overall length when a grab bar, cargo box, or hitch stays on
- Treating a 2+2 short roof as an extended 4P roof
- Ordering a “lifted” cover that is taller but still ~48 in wide
- Measuring with mirrors stuck out when they fold under the cover
- Using an enclosure roof chart alone for a full storage cover
- Trusting a dealer PDF over a tape measure on a modified cart
Yamaha Drive / Drive2 callout: Yamaha Drive and Drive2 roofs run about 70 in — longer than the ~54 in Club Car / E-Z-GO short roofs many “2 passenger” covers assume. Measure roof length before you pick an 8 ft short-roof SKU.
FAQ: golf cart cover fit guide
How do I measure a golf cart for a cover?
Record roof length (base front → base back), roof width (base left → base right), overall length (nose → rearmost point), outside-tire width (both axles), and height. Then check accessories — especially grab bars and lifts — before you pick Short vs Extended and Universal vs Lifted.
Is a 2+2 with a short roof an extended cover?
No. A rear seat under a short roof is still a short-roof cart. Extended means the roof itself continues over the rear seat (often ~80 in aftermarket).
Do I measure roof length or overall length for a storage cover?
Both. Roof length picks short vs extended pattern; overall length and rear accessories decide whether the cover actually clears the cart. Add tire width if the cart is lifted.
Base-to-base or edge-to-edge — which do competitors use?
Competitors usually publish outer edge → outer edge. All Good Covers teaches base-to-base for our charts. Record both if you want to compare another brand’s size chart without mixing methods.
Will a universal Amazon 48-inch-wide cover fit my lifted cart?
Often no. Many lifted 4-passenger carts list about 49.5–55.8 in overall width. All Good Covers lifted bottoms are about 53.0 in (134.7 cm) with about 48.0 in (122 cm) at the roof top — built for wider tires, not height-only “lifted” labels.
I have a short roof and a grab bar. What size golf cart cover?
Measure overall length with the grab bar installed. From All Good Covers experience, strongly consider upsizing to a longer / Extended cover so the fabric is not stretched over the bar.
Club Car, EZGO, or Yamaha cover size — can I trust the brand chart?
Brand and model tables are useful starting points (see the size chart above). Aftermarket roofs, lifts, and rear kits change dimensions. Your tape measure is the final authority.
How long does a made-to-order All Good Cover take?
Standard made-to-order is about 40 days to door. Confirm current lead time and any in-stock options on the product page before you order.
Storage cover vs driving enclosure — same fit?
No. Enclosures hang from the roof and wrap the cabin. Storage covers must swallow the parked envelope, including tires and rear accessories. All Good Covers products are parked storage covers.
Next step: shop or ask for a fit check
When your five numbers and accessory checklist are ready, match Short vs Extended and Universal vs Lifted, pick a pattern, and order — or send brand, model, year, the five numbers, and a side + rear photo to support for a fit check before made-to-order.
